Tekka was rather thankful for Kage's presence, and the creepy grin reinforced the gratitude exponentially. It reminded her a little too much of the grin from the girl at the manor. Hana, if she wasn't mistaken, and she wasn't. It was difficult to forget how close a call that day had been. She leaned into his embrace, getting more and more comfortable with the position and hoping that she wasn't going to make his arm fall asleep.
Still, it seemed like Skull-Face was amassing some sort of army, or perhaps a special-ops team of sorts. Difficult to tell when his plan to escape was still a big unknown, but since he was a villain it would certainly end up bad for the gang of protagonists outside of Dark Earth.

Kage couldn't explain it if he tried. Somehow, although he had never been the recipient of such affection before, the way Tekka was sort of snuggling up to the giant felt... right, like any other kind of contact wouldn't be quite the same. The wanderer had heard of falling in love, had seen it in movies, listened to it in music, and read about it in books, but he didn't know whether or not it was possible that it could actually be happening to him. It seemed likely at the moment, and Kage decided it better to assess the specifics later. For now, he just enjoyed having the vertically-challenged girl at his side. Currently, the screen was switching scenes again, showing Roy, Abby, Jess, and John as they walked across a street that led to a large yellow house. It had a wide driveway that connected to a sidewalk leading to the front door.
"What do you suppose Sam's project is?" asked Jess, his eyes shining with excitement. John chuckled.
"Beats me, kid," he replied, putting his hands on the back of his head and stretching. "Usually, Sam doesn't tell us about his inventions until the official unveiling."
"He's such a perfectionist..." sighed Abby. She looked down at this; apparently, it upset her somehow.

Tekka looked back up at the screen, shaking the lingering fuzziness of being in this position from her head. Noting the tone of Abby's voice as she mentioned Sam being a perfectionist. Yep, romantic tension if Tekka had ever seen it. Never failed that the girl of the group always fell for someone.
Not to say she ever exactly HATED it, because in action movies it often provided a motive. Motives were good.

It was interesting to finally see some definite romantic issues in the movie. Before, Abby hadn't seemed to be much of a love interest, but now... Kage snapped back to reality as the screen showed Sam sitting in a sightly darkened room. He was in a cubicle containing a kind of periscope and a huge computer, and the apparent inventor was using the periscope to see his friends. He turned around and pressed a red button on the wall. A part of the room's floor began to rise, and Sam managed to climb onto it before it got too high. The screen changed again, and the remaining four teenagers jumped as a section of the driveway near the garage opened up.
"Is that normal...?" wondered Jess, pointing to the platform as it rose from the ground with Sam standing on top of it.
"Hey, guys," the boy with the multicolored hair said casually. He was tossing a device that had a rocker switch on it. "Ready to go down to the lab?"

Well now, THAT was a little unexpected. Tekka blinked, smiling a little at the sight of the platform. It reminded her of an old cartoon she had seen as a kid, nostalgia bringing widening the smile on her face.

Kage could vaguely remember a couple of TV programs he had watched before his parents disappeared, where one of the characters was an unexplained boy genius. Thinking back to them, he recalled that the genius could always be smart enough to get himself into trouble, but never smart enough to prevent it from happening in the first place.
That's what makes the show work, I guess... he thought. On the screen, the four other kids were staring at Sam and the platform, looking very nervous. Sam chuckled and tossed the remote thing he held.
"You guys aren't afraid to ride this thing, are ya?" he asked playfully. "I mean - it beats walking in the house and taking the stairs to the basement." This seemed to make sense, for each of the waiting friends slowly boarded the elevatgr thing. Sam flipped the rocker switch on the device he held, and they all moved down as the driveway reclosed after them. As the platform sank back into the floor, all of its passengers (save for Sam) beheld the rest of the laboratory with wonder. There were various machines and apparati all over the floor space, including some sort of high-tech car, an opaque stasis tank, and a table laiden with various vials and beakers. However, the thing that had the teenagers most interested was the giant object under a white tarp in the middle of the lab.

Tekka marveled with the rest of the group as the lab was unveiled, wondering exactly WHAT was underneath the dramatically white tarp. It was clearly supposed to be the main focus, and if the blond was right it would provide a link between the villains and the heroes.

Kage was greatly intrigued by the looming tarped thing. It looked like a huge machine, whatever it was, and it now appeared that Sam was ready to show it off.
"Okay, folks..." he said with a grin. "This invention's not quite ready, ,but the mechanics have been perfected, so here it is..." The main character did a spin after taking hold of the cover, making it fly off of its treasure with a flourish. Under where it had lain was a large metal chamber with several tubes connecting it to a glass dome at the top. Next to it stood a free-standing terminal with a screen and keyboard. "Machine I!"

And thus more of the title was creeping into the movie, they had already established a Team, and now here was Machine I. The plot would probably begin to pick up soon, leading into the big conflict. Tekka grinned at the thought, she couldn't wait.

Kage chuckled as the four teenagers who weren't Sam stood there, looking completely astonished. Sam seemed to be satisfied by this as he stood there, waiting for someone to say something.
"It looks... really cool, Sam," complimented Abby. "but, uh... what does it do?" This brought the grin on Sam's face to a new level of wide.
"Well," he began. "First, I'd like you all to ask yourselves this... If you could have superpowers, what would they be?"
"Hey, this is like that English assignment we did last week..." John remarked, taking off his hat and twirling it on his finger thoughtfully. Sam nodded.
"Yes, and I'd like to point out that it was a very trivial composition topic," he replied, but the lack of effort the assignment had taken didn't seem to bother him. "However, it got me thinking... so I dug up my old research on electrochemical changes to a person's biological structure and designed Machine I." He walked over to the terminal, placing his hand proudly on the keyboard. "The user types in the parameters for the machine using this screen..." Sam then reached behind the pod and did something to make its hatch open. "and the pod will examine your brainwaves, amplifying the correct ones based on the specificity of your search." The quartet near where the elevator had been looked greatly confused, except for Jess. He surveyed the machine with an intrigued expression. Sam grinned, obviously hoping that he would have to do something else. "Perhaps a demonstration is in order?" he asked.

Ah-HA!!! So her hunch had been exactly right! Of course, she could easily see how this could (and most likely WOULD) backfire later, but for now she was content to see what powers were chosen. Besides, at least this was a good explanation for the mental powers (such as telepathy or telekinesis), but if they chose something like, say, super strength (cliche as it was) then their physical structure would have to be altered as well. Extra muscle tissue and stronger bones to put up with the stress, not to mention a stronger heart and increased oxygen levels in the blood to keep everything functioning normally...
Perhaps she was over analyzing, it was quite possible that Sam was simply giving everyone the simplified version of the machine's inner workings. Of course, too much technical talk could easily turn the public off of a movie, so she wasn't particularly surprised.

Kage found himself asking the question that Sam had requested his friends to think upon. What superpowers WOULD he want? The giant couldn't find any want for enhanced strength, seeing as he was quite big enough to defend himself and protect others... perhaps super-speed? Nah, what was the good of hurrying everywhere? The wanderer decided to leave it for later and watch the movie. All of Sam's friends looked at him with a mixture of curiosity and worry, until Jess spoke for all of them.
"Isn't that dangerous?" he asked timidly. Sam nodded.
"Highly. Any volunteers?" he retorted with a grin that almost looked sadistic. Kage had to guess that where he lacked in conventional humor, he excelled in off-color bits of his own. With an almost matching expression, Abbyy leaned forward and pushed Roy out of the group.

Tekka smiled, if given the opportunity to have superpowers, even with the risk like this, the little blond would probably be the first to sign up. After all, it was every kid's dream to have superpowers! Who WOULDN'T take the risk? Well... she could think of a few people. But given the choice, Tekka would sign up in a heartbeat. Telekinesis would be cool, moving things with her mind would mean that she'd never have to lift a finger again.
Though, it seemed that the group didn't share her enthusiasm on the matter as Roy was shoved forward to be the guinea pig.

Kage grinned. A few years ago, he would have been the one to step forward, most gladly. He was considerably content with his abilities at this point, though, and simply enjoyed watching Roy become the momentary Butt Monkey of the movie as he almost bumped into Sam. "All right, Roy," the inventor began. He pressed a red button on the trunk of the terminal, causing a blue screen to pop up. It held the image of a turning hourglass for a second, and then it showed a blinking cursor. "Just type in the keywords for you personal superpower search." Roy scratched his head for a minute or two. "Like what...?" "I don't know!" shouted Sam. "What kind of superpowers do you want? Super-strength? Invisibility?" This seemed to give the redhead an idea, and he began typing away industriously. Within seconds, the screen read: SUPERPOWERS?

Why did Tekka suddenly have the feeling that Roy was going to either type in something absolutely brilliant or something absolutely stupid? Well, perhaps it was because Roy had already established himself as a comic relief character...
