Caitlyn sat on the beach, her knees pulled up to her chin. She was dressed in her typical attire, that being jeans and a loose t-shirt. She was waiting for Kage Jernus, wondering if he got her note.
Even though she had only met him very shortly before, she felt like she could trust him to listen to her problems. He was certainly a more neutral observer than most of the people who already knew the story, and besides, she wanted to tell someone.

Kage approached the beach quietly, spotting Caitlyn almost immediately. She looked like she was thinking deeply about something, and he didn't want to disturb her thoughts. Besides, Kage hadn't made a loud entrance since his days raising hell with Joshua and Jeremiah. He wore one of his two pairs of black jeans, his white T-shirt, and the tattered black jacket that meant so much to him.
"It's a nice day, isn't it?" asked the young man quietly as he sat next to Caitlyn.

Caitlyn looked up, a bit surprised to see Kage as he had come over so quietly. "It is," She agreed, looking out over the waves. "Heh, to be honest, that's why I wanted to meet here. I love this place. It's beautiful even on a bad day." She said, looking over at him.
"Um, in any case, I wanted to take you up on your offer to listen to what's been troubling me...but I need a promise before I tell you anything. This stays between us." She looked over at him. "Can you promise me that?"

Kage nodded at her, not that the promise was necessary. In fact, he was surprised that his voice hadn't faded away from lack of use.
"Duelist's honor," he replied, holding his hand over his heart and chuckling. "I'm here to listen, not to talk or tell." He had actually been anticipating the telling of Caitlyn's troubles, simply because he knew it would help her to get a firmer hold on the situation. Stoic though Kage was, he still made it a point to help those who really needed it. "Just start whenever you're ready."

Caitlyn nodded. "Alright," she said, sighing a little. "I guess I should begin at the beginning," she said.
"A few days ago, I participated in a Territory Duel to defend the Momentum Tower from the Ookami. I'll skip the details, because I lost rather badly and I really would rather not rehash it. In any case, my opponent was Jubei Terumi, AKA the Butterfly Knife of the Ookami." She smiled slightly. "I'll be honest, even as he was in the process of kicking my butt, I thought he was handsome. After the duel was over, he asked me out on a date to..." she shook her head, "'make up for defeating me.'" She looked up. "I said yes, even if his reasoning did seem a bit bizarre."

Kage could not help but grin at Jubei's actions. It reminded him of his first Duel with Caitlyn, but quite a bit different. Still, he thought his companion should've sounded just a bit happier to talk about this Butterfly Knife character... All he could do was nod, however - Kage would save his questions for the end of the tale.

Caitlyn was still smiling, thinking back to that first date with Jubei. "You know, he's exactly the kind of guy I always thought I would be attracted to. He can be a gentleman, but he's a little bit of a rouge at the same time." She shook her head. "Have you ever seen the old movie Gone With the Wind? He reminds me of the male lead, Rhett Butler..." She said. "More than anything, I wish I was an Ookami or he was a Tora, so we wouldn't have to hide our relationship."

"No, I've never even heard of Gone With the Wind..." admitted Kage. Movies were quite the scarcity in his day, and he really hadn't seen one since he was about five or six. His parents had been big fans of ancient films, though, and he had watched some oddities while they were around. He remembered seeing a film from a dusty disk called Avatar that had been about blue aliens, which made him think of a character from a game he had played as a child. Kage had almost become lost in his thoughts, and practically missed the next part of Caitlyn's monologue. "Hey, if you were Ookami... you could give Jeremiah a hello for me," he quipped.

Caitlyn shrugged. "Eh, no one's seen it." She said. "Except, apparently, for me." She made a face,t hen looked off out tot he ocean. A little laugh passed her lips at his next comment. "Heh, I could, couldn't I?"
"In any case, we met up at the Mystic Wok and had dinner, and then we came...well, we came to the Deepsea Tides. Not near here," she said, "down the beach a little ways. The thing is, we got caught together by a member of the Tora clan. His name is Rex Coelestis, and he's a friend of mine." She made a face. "Unfortunately."

"Rex..." mused Kage, scratching his chin. "Name rings a bell, but... I'm just a little out of touch with most folks, so yeah." Caitlyn's next comment caught his ear, and he turned to her. "Hey, if you don't like being friends with Rex, why not just be done with him? I may not be a social expert, but..." THe young man stopped there, not wanting to make a bigger hole in the continuity of Caitlyn's tale than necessary. Besides, the questions oft answer themselves.

Caitlyn shook her head. "Oh, Rex is fairly new in the clan," she explained. "And I like him well enough," she said, wanting to correct the impression that she might not. "It's just, well, he recognized me. And we're not that close, so I'm a little scared that he'll decide that he'd rather be loyal to the clan, or impress the higher ups, or something, and he'll turn me in. I'm pretty sure that dating someone from another clan is considered treason..."

Kage scratched a bit of stubble on his chin, contemplating the nature of some less-than-honorable humans in this world. People often betrayed those they claimed as friends for such trivial things as fame or other gain. He was much too enthralled in Caitlyn's tale, however, to interrupt, so he continued to look at the surf without speaking.

Caitlyn sighed. "I have to say, getting caught was...kind of awkward. I flipped out at Rex as by my hearing he appared to insinuate that I was a foolish young girl." She made a face. "I'll grant the 'young' part, but I was and am fully aware of the possible consequences of my actions." She shook her head. "Um, in any case..." She decided to skip the rest of the details. "Rex left, and Jubei and I had a bit more of a date. It's not necessarily a hundred percent relevant, since to be honest it's mostly the fact that Rex knows that's stressing me. And Rex doesn't seem too happy about being a...how did he put it? 'Foot soldier.' Maybe I'm paranoid and-slash-or cynical, but it's way too easy for me to imagine him selling me out for his own gain."

Kage nodded to her. From the situation described by Caitlyn, her fears were one-hundred percent justified. Furthermore, this Rex fellow seemed to be quite a problem. If the distant observer knew anything, it was that a loaded gun was always dangerous. His parents must have had some enemies, because not even the Government was that keen on finding all runaways. Perhaps, and this was not Kage's usual style, he would need to lend a hand to his new friend.
"Say, Caitlyn..." he started. "Is Rex a fierce Duelist? Perhaps there's a way to shut him up, permanent-like."

Caitlyn shook her head. "Kage, Rex is an amazing duelist. Sure, he uses Fairies, which I must confess to vaguely questioning, but the way he uses them, it's like...like facing some kind of exremely sparkly Lightsworn deck or something." She paused. "So I suppose it's exactly like facing a Lightsworn deck."
