"I... didn't intend to convey the wrong idea," Sam said, trying to lift his new friend's spirits. Anyone who had just met him would assume him incapable of empathy, but that was because it was a challenge to get to know Sam. He could tell that Cross was probably bothered by what seemed a simple gesture of generosity. "I had, however, intended to make light of the situation at the expense of my lack of social knowledge concerning the field of courtship; though that would seem to be inappropriately timed at this moment. Do many of the people with whom you fraternize make unexpected gestures of intended romance?"

Cross was again struck with laughter at Sam's words. She just wasn't used to a kid speaking in such a way. "No not the ones I hang out with, though I won't say it hasn't happened in the past." she replied as she stopped laughing. "My friends I hang out with usually know me better than to try anything like that but don't worry it's nothing against you." She smiled at Sam to try and help reassure him.

"So, if your other friends know not to try anything of that nature, but that statement is nothing against me..." Sam summed up, a grin creepig onto his face. "Am I to interpret that I am free to try such things? Perhaps I am to interpret that you are open to courtship?" This was a moment where Sam's ability to read the personalities of individuals could make him quite likable, or it could work against him. He suspected that if Cross were in a better mood earlier, she might have made this kind of jest toward him. He hoped very much that similar displays of humor would be welcome to her.

The dark haired Kuma froze and thought for a moment as she assessed Sam's question. She suppressed a laugh at his terminology of courtship. A sly grin crept up on Cross's face and she leaned forward. "Why Sammy you need only ask." she replied. "Of course there are stipulations..." she said sitting back and grinning wider.

"I hadn't realized that it was such an organized endeavor," Sam said, almost completely forgetting the joke in his intrigue that dating could be an orderly, clean process. The way he'd observed it, such matters usually involved confusing emotions, varying rates of romantic maturity, and generally some sort of violent or otherwise unpleasant ending. "Do tell me more, Cross." Not that Sam cared, but it would likely be difficult for Cross to tell whether or not he was still joking.

Cross grinned again and stood up. "Well for starters, it does not involve this place." she replied. She quickly finished off her soda and set it back down, the pitcher the waitress had left was already empty. "Come on Sammy." she called as she started towards the exit.

Sam watched with a raised brow as Cross got up. He did the same and followed her toward the door. What on Earth could these stipulations be? He hoped he wouldn't have to wait long for a straight answer from her.
