"Yes, look at them," Sam encouraged. "Look at them all you like. Just keep this in mind. Whatever those two cards are, I can assure you that the card I hold here" He held up a card, not showing Cross the face. "is an average between the two cards you hold there."

Cross nodded and peeked at the two cards she held. A 7 of hearts and a 9 of clubs. She raised her eyebrows at Sam and set them down. "Okay magic boy, now what?" she asked taking a sip of her soda. Math was not her favorite subject but she was interested on where he would go with it.

Sam looked at the cards and smirked. He set the card he held down on the table, revealing it to be an eight, with four being clubs and the other four hearts.
"Now let's see those cards of yours," Sam suggested. "Is this an average?"

Cross flipped her cards and raised an eyebrow. "I guess so." she responded with a shrug. Although her math skills resembled that of a middle schooler's she had to admit his little trick was pretty cool. Not much magic to it really though. When she thought of magic she thought of that little nerdy kid with glasses and a scar on his forehead that fights some creepy old guy and goes to a really cool school.

"I can see that you're not terribly impressed," Sam guessed. "You're probably wondering why this trick didn't showcase much 'magic', and I'll tell you why that is. It's because the magic you're thinking of, at least to my knowledge, isn't possible by humans, and maybe not by anything else. Magicians are merely illusionists. That's why the first rule is never to reveal the trick's secret."

Cross nodded and shook her head with a smirk. "I like the movie version, much more fascinating even if it's not possible." Just as she finished her sentence the pixie waitress showed up with their food. Cross sat up in her seat and smiled. The girl set her steak sauce to the side and then placed their plates ahead of the two. She mumbled a thanks as she was pouring the steak sauce on the side of her plate greedily. "Finaalllyy!" she exclaimed chomping down on a chicken finger. She was officially in heaven.

Sam thanked the server and began eating his own meal. He sampled the fries and discovered them to be seasoned; not his favorite way to prepare the potatoes, but it would do. The burger was adequately sauced, and the bacon and cheese were not overused. It seemed as though someone in the kitchen had finally recognized the appropriate formula for a barbecue bacon cheesburger. For whatever reason, Sam didn't feel compelled to ask the usual roun of questions to the server that he was accustomed to asking. Perhaps this whole socialization thing was beginning to have an effect on him.

Cross groaned after eating two of the chicken fingers. "Oh my goodness, this is perfect." she dipped a fry in the steak sauce and popped it in her mouth. Perfect combo, the wonderful taste of A1 steak sauce and the seasoned salty fries and chicken fingers. She finished off her soda and refilled it again. "So how's the burger?" she asked for conversation needs. If she ate too quickly she'd be grouchy and uncomfortable so she was going to talk and slow down a bit.

"Oh, it's quite suitable, indeed," Sam answered contentedly. "It's a burger worthy of the name."

Cross chuckled and ate half of a chicken finger before deciding to comment back. "You're difficult to get going in a conversation, you know that?" she asked teasingly. He was like a puzzle with those certain pieces you couldn't find the spot for. The kid was different but pretty interesting. Cross would have ditched him after the first conversation but he was interesting enough so she stuck around. She felt challenged by him.

"You asked me how the food was, so I told you what I thought," Sam explained, a bit confused by her comment. "What were you expecting, a detailed review based on the composition and quality of each bite? I mean, my eidetic memory allows me to recall my exact experience with each bite, but I should think such a banal ongoing would bore an individual such as yourself." This, of course, was his way of getting back at Cross, but he sort of doubted she'd see the humor in it.

Cross rolled her eyes and chuckled. "No you crazy detailed person, I was just trying to start a conversation. I really don't need exact details on your food intake." she shook her head and finished off her chicken finger. "It's not too difficult to pick up some social skills." she looked around the restaurant until she found a good demonstration. "Over there, see that table?" she said nodding to these two guys that seemed to be deep in a conversation. "Don't you notice how the conversation is seemingly never ending? That is how it should be." she said teasingly. She was really messing with him but she was sure that Sam wouldn't pick up on it.

"I beg to differ," Sam retorted, glancing over at the pair across the room. "Studies show that the average conversation experiences a systematic and cyclical lull every 7 minutes." Though the point was valid, Sam was actually beginning to recognize the pattern in which Cross attempted humor. At this point, he would merely go on to see if he could exasperate her. That was what good friends did for fun, right? "Furthermore, it's common knowledge that one can acquire social experience through mimesis. Really, how else would one acquire such skills?"

Cross narrowed her eyes and snorted. "You know nobody likes a smarty pants." she mocked sticking out her tongue quickly trying to suppress a laugh. She noticed him going along with her ploy and laughed having to drop her glare. She shook her head and popped a fry in her mouth following it up with a drink. "Smart ass." she muttered shaking her head laughing.

"Given the rest of the body they belong to, I'd say my buttocks are the smartest in Hatsu Itonami," Sam replied. He had the faintest idea that he was starting to get the hang of this whole "joking around" thing. He was sure that before he knew it, he'd be capable of adapting to any style of conversation. Why, Cross's friends would have no trouble accepting him by the time he was done perfecting his emulation of Cross's behavior.
