Cross was still drinking her soda when Sam retorted. She busted out laughing which resulted in soda going up her nose and down her windpipe. The choking laughing girl snatched up her napkin and covered her mouth and nose with it as she tried to get herself together. Once she was able to breath again she gaped at Sam, giggles following afterwards. People around the restaurant were looking at her with mixed looks of concern, laughter, and even a few annoyed expressions. She rolled her eyes at them and discretely flipped off a lady who was giving her a total look of scorn. She looked back at Sam and shook her head with amusement. "Why Sammy, I do believe you're learning well what this conversation thing is." she replied still in a state of shock. She pushed away her soda and carefully started to eat her fries.

"I'm well aware," Sam said with an attempt at a grin. "For the record, I blame you." He had been just a bit concerned when Cross had started choking, but she was okay, and he could keep practicing his quips. He had the faintest feeling that he was beginning to get rather good at this.

Cross laughed loudly and shook her head in disbelief. "You blame me?" she asked shocked pressing her hand to her heart. She literally had been choking mere minutes ago and he was blaming her for it. "Why in the world would you blame me?" she asked with a wide smile from the amusement of the situation.

"You're the one who decided to try and get me to converse in a more lively manner," Sam explained. "At your request, I put forth a display of witticism, the magnitude of which caused you to inhale while ingesting your beverage." To anyone who wasn't Sam, the phrase "you asked for it" would have been the first thing to come to mind. Sam wondered briefly if Cross was aware that he had, in fact, been concerned when she was choking.

Cross rolled her eyes and ate a few more fries. "Just because I'm getting you to be more talkative doesn't mean you can use your newly learned stuff on me. Don't teach the teacher." she asserted followed by quickly taking a drink of her soda. She shook her head and lightly glared at him from across the table. "Or at least warn me not to be drinking something when you start getting all witty. I'd rather not choke anymore today." she added with a slight smirk.

"Duly noted," Sam replied, taking a drink of his own beverage. "Though I should mention, isn't the teaching experience designed so that the teacher is given opportunities to learn from the student?" This situation reminded Sam a lot of a time when he was a child. This elicited a grin on Sam's face; the kind of secretive grin when one recalls an inside joke while in public.

This guy thought he was so smooth with his replies. Cross sighed and rolled her eyes again as she chewed on her straw lightly. "Well not this teacher. I don't get paid." she retorted with a leveled smirk. "Besides, that is not the case in situations of socialization." she added sitting back up and eating a few more fries.

"So I can tell," Sam agreed, trying not to let that secretive grin grow. He hadn't had this much fun in about five years or so, and Cross didn't even have a PhD. Maybe Sam had looked at this whole conscription thing the wrong way...

Cross felt she'd got her point across so she finished her meal and sat back sipping on her drink. "That was a much needed meal." she stated satisfied. It had been too long since her last chicken finger meal. She'd been way to busy and stressed out to really enjoy a meal. It was a nice way to take the weight of Hotaru's kidnapping off her shoulders. She visibly relaxed and smiled while drinking her Dr. Pepper.

Perhaps it was the fact that Cross was relaxed. Perhaps it was simply the fact that she hadn't noticed what had just happened. Either way, Sam felt confident that his socialization teacher had just proven his point for him. Not that it mattered; what mattered was that they were both having a blast, and Sam now knew whom he would seek out, should he feel the need for companionship. The waitress came around with the check shortly after Sam polished off his fries. By the looks on the patrons' faces, it was clear that she needn't ask how everything was, so she moved on to the next important matter.
"Are you both on one check today?" she asked in her almost squeaky voice as she pushed up her glasses out of habit. Sam answered in the affirmative, and the waitress set the check down.

As soon as the waitress came over Cross was reaching in her pocket for her card but froze when Sam said it would be on one ticket. She slowly withdrew her hand and sat up as she looked at Sam. "I really hope you don't mean this to be a date." she stated bluntly and loudly without realizing what she'd even said. Her brain took a minute to catch up and continue. "Cause I do have money and will pay in an instant." Usually when guys paid for meals they did it on dates and this definitely wasn't a date. Cross didn't even really go ON dates, she had too much fun just hanging out with groups of people or just hanging out. No tags about it being a date. Internally Cross was on the verge of a massive freak out by Sam's quick and hopefully innocent gesture.

"I suppose it couldn't have been meant as such," Sam replied hurriedly, seeing that Cross seemed to be experiencing some sort of internal code red. "I've never been on a date, nor am I familiar with the social construct. I've just observed that it is customary for one to treat one's companion as a token of good will for being similarly treated by said companion. You've treated me to a good time and a beneficial learning experience; in return, I'm treating you to lunch." With that, Sam pulled his own card out from his right wristband and handed it to the waitress. When she left, Sam said, "If it would ease your apparently troubled conscience, and if you are able to, you could take care of the tip."

Cross relaxed and fished out some cash from her pocket. "I suppose that's alright then." she mumbled slightly embarrassed for her massive internal freak out. She glanced around at a few of the staring people and shot them a glare. "Stupid nosey people." she muttered to herself.
It took Cross a few minutes to get what Sam had completely said but when she did she started to giggle. She wasn't quite sure what exactly she was giggling about but it probably had something to do with his wording. Though why NOW it would be funny, she also had no idea. Mostly she was laughing at herself though.

Sam didn't quite understand why Cross was laughing. Granted, his point had been rather difficult to get across, but was it that funny? Either way, she was calm now, which in turn put Sam at ease. The waitress brought Sam's card back, and he signed the reciept.
"Now, back to your assumption about this being a date..." Sam said to Cross, his voice infused with mock suspicion. He didn't know if that assumption was supposed to be flattering, or if her freak out was supposed to be insulting, but now that it was over, whatever it was was funny.

Cross sighed and hung her head. The whole reason she'd thought that was because that was what usually happened whenever she hung out with people and it freaked her out. It was like a sneak attack after a fun and chill time. "No reason." she mumbled sipping her drink and staring down at the melting ice cubes.
