A fresh, salty breeze swept off the sea, tugging playfully at Yukiko's long, brown hair. The spray that had been carried with the wind dripped softly onto her face like cool raindrops, catching in her long eyelashes and causing her to blink rapidly. Yukiko breathed in the fresh ocean air and sighed quietly. She loved the ocean, but quiet places like this always made her extra thoughtful, and with that came things she's much rather not dwell on. Thus, the sigh.
Yukiko mindlessly toyed with a strand of hair, eventually attempting to pull the wild, brown mass back, only to have it wiping around her face seconds later. The teen shook her head, feeling the sun's rays seep deep into her marrow. In a way, it seemed to melt away her cold independence as well as the chilly water; and suddenly she wanted somebody to talk to.

Hotaru walked along the beach, holding onto her cloak in one hand. She didn't want to wear it just yet, but she remembered from her last time at the beach she was wishing for her warm cloak the whole time.
As she walked, she found a girl close by. She seemed lonely to Hotaru. She frowned; maybe she should walk over to the girl? The red head nodded her head to herself, deciding to go up to her.
"Hello." Hotaru said softly. "Mind if I join you?"

Yukiko looked up at the sound of a voice not belonging to the little one in her head. She saw another girl standing not to far off with a friendly expression on her face.
"No, not at all." Yukiko replied politely and with a warm smile. It was a little stranger that as soon as she felt lonely someone appeared. But she wasn't going to question it.

Hotaru watched the waves out at sea. "The sea is so calming, isn't it?" she asked the girl. "So many troubles, so many worries. They all seem to go away when you come to a place like this."
She closed her eyes and inhaled the salty scent of the water around them. "Beautiful." she said.

Yukiko's green eyes shifted away from the girl and back to the water. The crashing waves echoed dully in her ears as she calmly replied.
"Yes..." she quietly agreed, and small smile tugging at her lips. "Beautiful."

Hotaru nodded, looking back to the girl with her big grey eyes. "So what's your name? You can call me Phoenix." she smiled again.

"Uh... Yukiko." She replied, her gaze breaking away from the ever-changing sea to meet the other girl's. She managed a slight smile. Yukiko paused, allowing the sound of the surf to fill in the silence. After a moment she spoke. "Phoenix... that's a really nice name." She stated thoughtfully. "Very unique too."

Hotaru giggled a little. "Why thank you, Yukiko. I don't think I've ever heard anyone with your name either." she laughed under her breath. "Of course, Phoenix is just a nickname."
Hotaru paused, looking down at the girl's wrist. "So you're in Ookami?"

Yukiko held up her arm to examine her wrist and then nodded. "Yeah." She paused, taking that minute to take note of Phoenix's wristband. "And you're in... Tora, right?"

Hotaru held up her own wrist. "You got it!" She brushed back her hair a little. "I know a few people in Ookami, I personally would have preferred going into that clan when I was drafted." she laughed slightly.

"Well... we really don't have much choice, do we?" Yukiko quietly considered herself lucky. She didn't have friends at all before being drafted, and most she had now were Ookami. She didn't have to worry about differences getting in the way. Not that she would be the type to do such a thing in the first place...

Hotaru nodded. "You're right, we don't have a choice." She frowned; being friends with someone from another clan is one thing, but when you're dating one of them, it just makes it that much harder. "I wonder how big each clan would be if we did get to chose though." she smirked.

Yukiko let out a small laugh. "You're right. Everyone would be clumped together." She paused, wondering if her next comment would cross the line at all. But she decided to say it anyway. "Sometimes though, I think it would just be easier if we didn't have that to worry about you know? Without the war we could just... be..." She paused and blinked, which was followed by a weak smile. "I'm not making much sense, am I?"

Hotaru smiled softly. "I understand exactly what you mean." She sighed, her smile turning into a frown as she looked down at her feet. "I've already seen the damage this war has caused." the red head clenched her fists tighter, thinking back to past memories.
She took a deep breath, looking back to Yukiko. Hotaru still had a slight frown on her face. "Let's hope you never see the things that I've witnessed." she said, completely serious. Hotaru's eyes reflected painful expirences, though her expression showed mainly the sorrow of what she had dealt with in the past.

Yukiko was taken over by a look of surprised uncertanity. She could see the pain in her compainion's eyes, like a hidden reflection behind a clouded mirror. Yukiko didn't reply right away, and instead looked at the waves, hoping that would help her figure out what to say.
"The past can haunt us like a bad nightmare." She said after a long pause and deep breath. "It just keeps coming and coming, and it never seems to stop." Her eyes shifted from the water and back onto Phoenix. "But also like nightmares... we wake up. And although they can stay with us a long time, eventually... we make way for happier dreams. And happier memories."
