"I owe my dedication to peace to a little simple research," Sam began. "A few years before I was conscripted, I was reading some old history records, dating back almost a thousand years. The records depicted life before the Age of Apocalypse, and I fell in love with the comparatively utopian society of the 21st century. There were wars, but their purposes were usually directed toward keeping dangerous powers at bay. This war is one of attrition; nothing is gained from it but destruction and grief. Our government tells us that we should pride ourselves in being one of the most advanced cities in the recovering society, but I have yet to see any trace of the brotherhood that would mark a truly healing and progressive social structure." That would be as close as Cross would come to hearing what Sam's true intentions were. At least, the closest until he could figure her out.

Cross nodded lightly. "Gotcha. You know I've heard stories of back then as well. My brother used to read me some of them. I liked the sound of a place without the wars. Kids especially shouldnt have to deal with a place like this. I get where you're coming from." she said thinking back to her older brother. "I think the brotherhood thing what you're saying is pretty much what I've been searching for. A nice knit of friends without worries of fighting or bloodshed..." she said dreamily. Sure she basically had it already but there was always a chance that someone could ruin it, like the psychos who kidnapped her best friend.

"I used to have that..." said Sam, drifting off a bit himself. "And then the government decided they wanted to stick a scientist into a clan full of farmers." He realized the generalization he was making, and raised his eyebrows at Cross apologetically. "No offense, if you happen to be of the rural persuasion."

Cross laughed and shook her head against the ground. "Nope, I grew up rich and not here. Agriculture and I do not get along and never will." she said smirking. "Gotta admit though, it's nice being in the farmer clan. We get first dibs on all food products if we want it." she commented.

"As long as I can get my sugar wafers, I don't care about much else," Sam said with a shrug. "Well, that and my favorite sarsparilla soda." It occurred to him that such repasts were laughably odd, and Cross would probably laugh. Sam didn't mind, strangely enough; he found the sound pleasing to his ear.

Cross laughed at his choice in junk food. "Sugar wafers? That's your sweets choice? I'd at least would have thought you'd be into something I don't know... Chocolaty or sour?" she chuckled again and shook her head then sat up on her elbows. "And what the hell is sarsaparilla soda? Gotta go for the good stuff man. Dr. P and coke!"

"For your information, sarsparilla is the good stuff," Sam defended. "It's similar to root beer in composition, but the flavor is more natural and smooth. The processed products are less healthy and aren't as pleasing to the palette." Well, he got what he had bargained for. Oddly enough, he felt a bit more at ease now. Perhaps associating with Cross and her friends would end up being a positive endeavor.

Cross scoffed and shook her head followed by a slight chuckle. "Less healthy or not, that stuff is like gold for the stomach. You've just got strange tastes." she sat up and tucked her legs behind her, slightly sitting on them. Only bad thing about a shirt, no sitting criss-cross. "What's your favorite food?" she asked randomly. She had a tendency to ask random questions sometimes when she felt like it. Plus it was a good conversation holder.

"If I had to choose..." Sam began, but trailed off. Did he have a standard favorite food? Apart from his thinking food (snacks he kept around for when he was working on experiments or inventions), he couldn't think of anything he really enjoyed, except... "chili-dogs. I think it would be chili-dogs. Yours?" That was proper social protocol, right? You're asked a question, you answer and ask in return. Yeah, that was bound to be right.

Cross nodded and smiled. "Not a bad choice. Mine would have to be chicken fingers." she ate those things all the time! Almost every restaurant had them and that's what she ordered, or something very close to it. Growing up she wasn't allowed food like that so when she was on her own, she tried it and loved it. "Actually food sounds really good right about now." she commented finally noticing her growling stomach. It made a large gurgle sound which caused the dark haired girl to start giggling.

"Perhaps a repast would suit you?" Sam inquired. To him, of course, this was no more than a simple suggestion. Knowing his luck today, however, it probably wasn't that simple. "Say, the Wok? I'm sure they have chicken fingers there. I'd be more than willing to offload some excess funding."

Cross jumped up quickly and dusted herself off. "Hell yea!" she exclaimed excited. "I actually don't think I've eaten all day." she said thinking out loud and shrugging. "Come on Sammy, let's go chow down!"

"I don't prefer to go by Sammy, but your gusto is infectious," Sam replied, secretly glad he hadn't made some sort of social faux pas. After the winking debacle (which he still couldn't figure out), Sam figured it best to watch his actions a little more carefully, lest he accidentally do something a lot more embarrassing. On a side note, he also wondered if Cross had understood that he was planning on paying her way as a token of felicitation.

Cross chuckled and started to walk away. "Oh I didn't think you preferred it Sammy. Just like Jack doesn't like me calling him Jackie." she chuckled again and shrugged. "You're just gonna have to live with it, I change names for my amusement. Now come on slowpoke, let's go get some chow." she called back smirking.

Sam shrugged. He figured that he would have no say in the matter. Hadn't his parents joked that that was the way it was when there was a woman in your life? It had always been an amusing little facade, seeing how happy his parents were, and a smile crept to Sam's lips as he got up to follow Cross; a smile for the fond memories and for the irony that had befallen him, though the circumstance didn't quite match the source.
