Sam sat on a park bench near the center of the garden. Not many people bothered to go all the way to the middle of Black Rose Garden just to relax, which was why Sam spent a good deal of time there. His fellow Kuma members didn't share his opinions on the importance of scientific progress, nor did they seem eager to end the war peacefully.
The day was overcast, but not terribly dark, and the temperature was cool enough for Sam to comfortably wear his favorite sleeveless shirt; the one his parents had given him the last time he had seen them. It was a little childish, what with its lightning bolt emblazoned across a blue circle on the front of the shirt's black surface, but any memento was a good one, Sam supposed.
Realizing that his thoughts had gone astray, Sam returned his focus to the notebook on his lap. Scrawled on its pages were countless equations and crude blueprints. This was the second reason for Sam's preference toward solitude. He didn't trust anyone with his plans for Project Exodus. Anyone.

Cross wandered out to the Gardens in need of a little relaxation from the afternoon she'd had. She'd been at the meeting to find Hotaru and her brain was a little fried from thinking up good rescue plans. They weren't exactly finished with the plans as of yet but they'd get them situated within the next few days.
Cross was walking around the Gardens when she noticed an odd haired guy sitting on a bench writing something. She wandered around until she was standing silently behind him and reading over his shoulder. Her eyebrows rose at the gibberish like writing. She noticed he was also in Kuma and perked up. Lately the only Kuma she was aware of was the psycho that kidnapped her best friend.
Cross cleared her throat and smiled slightly as she spoke. "Whatcha writing? Or drawing?" she asked puzzled with the paper. She really didn't care but Cross couldn't pass up a chance to surprise someone. She liked making an unexpected entrance.

"They're algorithms and equations relating to the correlation between String Theory and temporal displacement," Sam answered. He hadn't seen the girl approach him, but her stealth wasn't enough to evade his detection. "To answer your question, I heard your footsteps as you circled me to approach me from behind. This morning's rain and the day's cool temperature have given the grass a wonderful and audible sort of crisp."

Cross was impressed and she smiled with a slight nod. She circled around and sat down beside the guy with a sigh. "I won't lie and tell you that I understood a word you just said, I'm clueless." she said with a chuckle and a shrug. "Yea I wasn't exactly going for stealth. I've had enough talk of that today to keep me amused for a year. I figured why not try and get a look at the elusive man with strange things in his journal. I got my wish." she said shrugging and leaning back against the damp bench. "I'm Cross by the way, you are?"

"Sam," Sam replied simply. Something in his brain nagged him to put the notebook down and make eye contact, but for once, the numbers were beginning to line up. He hadn't had a good day to really work in some time now, what with clan duties and other trivial distractions. He finished a couple simple expressions before realizing something.
This Cross woman had seen his notebook.
Sam slammed the book shut immediately and turned to face the new arrival. She seemed personable enough, but was she really clueless?
"For what intentions are you planning to use stealth to such magnitude?" he asked, hoping this was the proper protocol for evading the topic of Project Exodus.

Cross chuckled at his sudden freak out. "Oh cool your horses Sammy." she said smiling and shaking her head. The guy may have noticed her come up but he sure didn't realize that he should hide his little diary.
She sighed when he asked about her stealth intentions, she wasn't sure whether or not to trust this new guy but she figured why not. She could use a level head outside of the group. "My best friend was kidnapped..." she muttered looking down at her boots. "By three psychos actually. They're literally crazy and they have her in this place which looks virtually impossible to get into. Her family and friends and I were coming up with ideas to spy on them so we can see what exactly we're dealing with." she paused and shook her head. It was such a depressing topic and the weather seemed to match up with it. "We're worried they've brainwashed her or something. I'm not even sure whether my best friend is still there mentally... Sorry for unloading this on you. It's just plaguing my mind right now knowing another Kuma and two other psychos have her." she said with a sad shrug.

"Impossible to get into, eh?" Sam mused. Again, it seemed like he should lend a sympathetic ear, but whoever these psychopaths were, clearly they had never matched wits with Samuel Albert Revlis. "Have you tried using a holographic camouflage generator and a subsonic field disrupter? Combined, they'd have no way of detecting your presence ahead of time. That would just leave the matter of picking the lock. If these people are few in number, incapacitating them should be child's play."

Cross blinked and whipped her head around to look at Sam. "Uhhh..." she muttered lost. "Nearly impossible, we think we have a way to get in and spy." she inserted quickly. "I don't think getting in would be too much a problem but they're really psychotic. A 14 year old girl who killer her own parents and god knows how many others. A cannibalistic man who thinks hes a child. And the ring leader who we know nothing about. He's the Kuma." she replied trying to convey the seriousness of it. "Besides, we don't have whatever type of technology you just said."

"Oh, we all have that technology," Sam replied with a sly grin. "The clan leaders just don't like to brag about the toys they've got stashed away."
Sam took a moment to really look at Cross, now that she was already staring at him. Upon making real eye contact, he could sense the fear, the uncertainty, and the bewilderment that this woman must be feeling. Sam did not have the social experience that most had; that knowledge of what intimidation feels like. Surely, such a brilliant mind would not stoop to allowing one who is mentally unfit to function have any power over him. Problem individuals such as that were to be dealt with swiftly and without mercy, just as they would take care of you. Perhaps Cross needed a new perspective, a way to throw out the unnecessary process of observing and waiting until it may be too late.
"Cross..." started Sam, not quite sure of how to provide such a morale boost. "Would it not be better to use such stealth and technological aid to achieve victory over this band of miscreants, rahter than give them a chance to discover you and make demands to exploit the friendship you have with the victim? If need be, it is not a problem to procure the devices necessary to accomplish this."

Cross bit her lip and looked down at the ground thinking about that. "I've thought about it. The only problem with doing it right away is some of our team is still hurt from the kidnapping and we're going to need them. I doubt they'd exploit the friendship. They've probably already brainwashed her. If they wanted to hurt us they would go for us not her. They call her Mommy." She sighed and shook her head. She really hated the situation her friend was in. She'd never felt so useless. She put up this front at the house that she was all over the situation but in all honesty she was scared.
She looked up at the dark sky and sighed again. "Usually I'm not so depressing to talk to. I'm the life of the party." she said with a slight chuckle at the thought.

It happened before Sam could enact any mental protocols, before he could assure himself that it was the appropriate method for administering comfort to an acquaintence. Without thinking, he placed a hand on Cross's shoulder.
"For what it's worth, I find myself fortunate that I was able to observe the serious Cross first," Sam told her. "It is my opinion that one's true character is only witnessed when they are being pushed to their limits by life. If anything, this tells me that you are a caring individual for whom I would not mind lending my assistance." He hoped that this little speech would help Cross gain some confidence. No large feat was ever successfully attempted without belief that the task could be completed.

Cross was a little shocked by his words and by his hand. She didn't have a problem with it, in fact she felt calmed. She leaned her head back down and looked over at Sam with a genuine smile. "Thanks." she said sincerely. "Pushed to the limits indeed." she said with a humorless laugh. "You'd really be willing to help although you've just met me? I'm not sure the rest of the group would mind a little extra help and I know we need it. Besides you sound smart and seem like a good guy." she replied with a quick wink at the end. She smiled at him and realized that she was gaining some more confidence in the rescue. It wasn't too much but it was really nice nonetheless.

"When I was very young, my parents taught me that one can learn anything one's heart and mind desires," Sam told Cross. "That knowledge is free, but the moral responsibilities and application of that knowledge can be costly. I am a man of science, but I firmly believe that each individual should use his or her knowledge and abilities for the greater good. It is true that we have just met, but I surmise that assisting you and your friends in rescuing someone from the clutches of a group of mental defectives can be classified as 'the greater good'." He finished his explanation with a wink, not really sure if it was the accepted social convention to do so. For all Sam knew, he may well have returned some unspoken message between them. Whatever the case may be, he hoped his words had made things clear for Cross.

Cross nodded and looked out into the garden. "That makes sense... in a totally extended point of view." she replied with a chuckle. She chuckled again when she realized he'd just winked at her. "You don't get out much do you?" she asked in a fit of giggles. She was glad for the opportunity to laugh and stray away from the subject. Too much depressing talk for one day as it is.

"Au contraire. I get out all the time," Sam corrected Cross. "I just don't happen to associate with many of the townsfolk, so the paradigm of interpersonal interaction is something of an unexplored area for me." He didn't quite see what was so funny that had made this woman laugh so much. It was actually somewhat baffling. "On what grounds do you present your deduction? Did I say or do something in error?"
