Madoka's head turned automatically to Jack's call. She ran over to see two familiar names beside each other:
Merit Mizu , Jack Mizu Bellow their names was the years of their birth and death. The date under her mother's was a little over fourteen years ago, with her dad's being only three years ago. She suddenly wondered how her father could go through life for eleven years without her mom with him. Then she wondered, for the millionth time, what her mom might have been like.
After a few moments of silence, she shook her head and turned to Jack. "Thanks." she told him, trying to smile. "I kinda feel bad," she said, scratching her head. "I don't visit much..."

Jack placed a hand on her shoulder. "Things happen when you're in the clans, I bet they understand that. Especially considering the times." He removed his hand after a moment and smiled.

Madoka returned the smile with one of her own. She turned back to the two graves in front of her, not sure what to say. It was a little awkward.
"Uh... hey, Mom, Dad." Good. Greatings were always the best way to start. "Sorry I haven't come in a while," 'Or longer' She kicked herself at the thought. She suddenly felt something wet in her eye.
No. No no no no no!
Madoka quickly pulled herself together. "Well, I miss you guys." she said all too fast. "S- see you later!" The brunette swiftly turned her whole body around, as to not face the graves. She took a short, yet deep breath, then smiled hyperly at Jack.
"I'm sorry, 'didn't mean to pull you away from your mom." she told him as if nothing had just happened.

Jack backed off a little as Madoka spoke, wanting to let her keep what was private, private. It was over in about twenty seconds, possibly less, and the younger Ookami spun around quickly to speak with him. He repressed a sigh.
If she hadn't visited her parents in a while, of course it was going to be like that, but he didn't push it. Though he managed to catch a glimpse of the mask slipping, then the thought hit him like a train hits door-to-door salesmen. She was covering up her emotions with happiness and hyperactivity.
When he had taken his sister here when they were little to see their mother, she had cried. Still did to his knowledge, hell, even he couldn't mask the sadness all that well. And it wasn't healthy to keep it all bottled up inside, how long had Madoka been using the false-joy to be able to keep the mask on so well?
These thoughts flew through his mind in mere seconds and he grinned. "It's fine." he said. Now, how to get her to let it all out. Keeping it all inside couldn't be good for her. "I needed someone to take my mind off of her. I've... just been thinking of her a lot lately."
Great, in trying to get a girl to spill her guts, he spilled his. He could have smacked himself. Great move Einstein.

Madoka nodded to his words. Well... perhaps saying something small about herself would make him feel a little better. She tried her best to smile, secretly scaring herself at how good she was at it by this point.
"Well, I'm guessing you have at least some memories of her, right?" she asked. "I don't even have that. Not of my mom at least." she decided to keep it like that, not even trying to go into much about her dad. That one was just too hard to talk about.

Jack nodded. "Yeah, good ones. She taught me the basics of Duel Monsters, and was just, well, just always there." His smiled turned a little sad and he looked Madoka in the eyes. "What about your dad?" He questioned.

Crap. He just had to ask!
"Er, he um..." she played with the end of her shirt, not making eye contact with Jack. "Y-you see, w-well, when I eleven... he was, um..."
Madoka turned around quickly, still looking down, and took a few deep breaths. This was what she had been afraid of this whole time. There had been only one other person she had told this to, and she couldn't quit crying when she did. Did she really want to go through that again?
She sighed loudly. Maybe she did want the attention she had kept trying to deny when she held back her feelings.
The brunette slowly turned back to Jack, still looking away from him, to her right. Her eyes we beginning to sting as she felt one or two tears escape. "A robber broke into our house... murdered my dad right in front of me..."
It was at that moment the mask shattered for the second time in her life.

Jack would have gaped if Madoka wasn't crying her eyes out in front of him. She had seen that happen? How had she managed to act as happy as she did? Why did she have to carry that kind of a burden, watching a family member die? These questions were roughly pushed to the side as he stepped forward and enveloped her in a hug. It wasn't a soft gentle one, it was stronger, rooting her to the world and assuring her that there was someone here.
He let her cry as he searched for words, not that there were many out there that would help.

Madoka was caught by surprise when Jack hugged her. She nearly gasped, but was cut off by her tears. She stayed there, yet not completely accepting the hug at first. In fact she was debating on if she should try getting out of it, but there were two things wrong with that plan: he was obviously the stronger one of the two, and plus... maybe she wanted this after all.
"I don't want people feeling sorry for me." she murmured under her breath. She tried her best resist the hug, but in the end, found herself hugging Jack back. But why? That wasn't how thing were supposed to go! People were supposed to see her happy all the time, not like this.

Jack nodded and rocked back and forth slightly, noting that his shirt was becoming quite damp from tears. A small price to pay. "But you can't just keep all this bottled up inside, it's not good for you." He replied softly. With that, he began to hum quietly. It was an old song, a thousand or so years old actually. Though the title escaped him.

Madoka didn't reply for a while. She agreed that he was right, but... "But if I'm not happy, how can I expect others to be?" Sure, it wasn't 100% genuine, but at least the people around her would think so. She suddenly felt guilty. "My best friend doesn't even know what happened."
She decided to leave it at that. She had spilled too much as it was. Instead she remained silent, trying to listen to Jack as she gradually began to calm down until she finally stopped crying.

Jack smiled. "Everyone knows that it's impossible to be happy all the time, no one expects constant and total joy from anyone." He placed a hand on top of her head. "Just because you're not happy sometimes doesn't mean everyone's going to be sad when they see you if you're not bouncing around."
"As for your friend, it's your choice to say what happened or not. I'm sure they won't hold it against you." She had stopped crying and he loosened his grip, she could pull back if she wanted to.

Madoka backed up the moment Jack losened his grip. She quickly wipped off what was left of her tears and looked up at him, smiling bright. "Thanks..." she said, not knowing what else to say.
She looked down, scratching the back of her head. "So... can we just pretend that never happened?" she didn't mean to sound rude if she did, she just didn't want others to know.

Jack cocked his head to the side jokingly. "Forget what happened?" He asked, obliging with her request.

Madoka laughed and pushed him playfully. "Well," she began. "I kinda interupted you back there," she nodded toward where they were standing earlier before the search for her parents' graves. "It'd be rude to just leave your mother without saying something." Did she sound too pushy? Maybe a little, but it wasn't intented! The younger Ookami had taken out personal time of Jack's visit when she didn't have the right.
