"Nothing quite that drastic," Sam corrected her, taking another swig of the grape soda-like drink. "My grandfather was born with only nine fingers, and my brother's eyes are deep violet in color." Of course, he would not reveal the secret of his own mutation. Purple eyes were one thing, but his own aberration was quite another. Sam wasn't too quick on the uptake when it came to socialization, but he knew when something was an embarrassment.

Cross was shocked, his grandfather had only NINE fingers and his brother's eyes were deep violet!? "That's friggin' awesome!" she exclaimed alerting two guys who were well on their way to getting drunk in the corner. She quickly flipped them off and turned back to Sam. "So your brother has violet colored eyes? That's so cool! I bet they're gorgeous..." she said sighing dreamily at nothing in particular. Little things fascinated her easily sometimes. "Do you have a cool mutation?" she asked excitedly.

"Er, not unless the hair strikes you as 'cool'..." Sam said. This was a true statement, of course. His two-tone hair was all natural, and the style had nothing to do with any kind of hair care product. If he could really trust Cross, he'd let her in on the secret. Otherwise, he doubted that she'd find his other mutation as attractive as Tom's purple eyes.

At the mention of his hair Cross reached over and ruffled it. "Now that you mention it... your hair is pretty awesome." she ruffled the black then the brown before sitting back against the stool. She took another drink of her margarita before speaking again. "So you don't have any other cool mutation?" she asked curiously. "Cause I mean purple eyes is friggin cool. Nine fingers is a bit strange but hey we're in a city with all sorts of strange people." she shrugged sipping on her drink.

And here, Sam ran into a problem. Not the ruffling of his hair; he actually found that endearing somehow. No, if he didn't fess up, the bond of trust would form, and he'd either have to hide his mutation forever or risk upsetting Cross.
Sam got the faintest feeling that the latter wasn't a risk worth taking. Ever.
Deciding that it was best to let her know before it was too late (they were drinking, after all, not to mention forming said bond of trust), Sam leaned forward slightly and lowered his voice. "Well, there is one other thing, but it's essentially my second darkest secret. If I show it to you, you must promise both acceptance and confidence in the matter." Now that Sam thought of it, this could turn out to be the data he was looking for. The conclusion to his experiment concerning whether or not he could trust Cross.

Cross smiled brightly and nodded enthusiastically. She held out her pinkie to him. "I swear to accept it and be confident in the matter. Pinkie swear." she ended the sentence off in a serious manner while inside she was bursting with excitement.

"By 'confidence,' I mean 'secrecy,'" Sam notified Cross before extending his hand and hooking his pinky with hers. Normally, a verbal contract was enough; Sam had never initiated nor been part of a pinky swear or other physical contractual bindings. However, if this was how Cross showed she was serious, that was fine by Sam. With their pinkies still connected, he pulled her in rather close - as close as he felt he needed to so that absolutely no one would see this. With his other hand, Sam opened one eye extra wide and removed the contact lens, revealing the bright pink iris beneath the brown covering.

Cross nodded and set her drink down as he leaned in close. She wasn't sure what he was doing until he removed the contact. Her mouth dropped and she reached out and grabbed his face holding it so she could look at the bright pink that was his eye color. "Wow." she breathed shocked. "It's... brilliant." she muttered turning his head slightly to the side to get a different angle. "This is amazing." she added just as perplexed.
Realizing just how close she'd gotten she released his face and sat back slightly with a slight red hint to her cheeks. "Sorry." she muttered with a small smile. "That's just too mind-blowing..."

Sam smiled back at Cross, using one hand to block the general view of the revealed eye and the other to put the contact lens back on. To be honest with himself, he'd mostly expected Cross to laugh in his face. He expected that he'd have to take some sort of extreme measures to keep her from spreading the secret like butter on a bagel. The fact that she'd been fascinated enough to seize his face and examine his eye further made him feel... loved?
"It's quite all right," he replied after a few moments of contemplation and speech preparation. "At birth, my parents suspected albinism. I underwent all of the genetic tests and such at a very young age, but no such explanation exists. They've isolated the mutation, though. My grandfather's missing finger is actually the inspiration for my family's scientific interests."

Cross finished off her drink and ordered a quick wine cooler to calm her drinking down. "That's pretty cool. It makes sense that they would be more interested in sciencey stuff. I'd want to figure things out too if I were in their shoes." The fact that she hadn't tried to figure out who exactly murdered her family hit her like a ton of bricks at that moment. She tried to cover it up by taking a long drink of the fruity wine cooler and offering Sam a small smile. "But that really is something. Why don't you go without your contacts? Who the hell cares what other people think? If they have a problem with it then they're just douche bags who need a good fist to the face." she stated.

"Because such physical confrontation is a bit barbaric for my tastes," Sam answered solemnly. "For you, I am willing to explain things; rather thoroughly, I might add. I'll admit, your curiosity brings me a measure of happiness I haven't felt in years. For others, who are not curious, but are instead clueless, I have no desire to put forth the effort of outlaying my past. For those who would ridicule me, I cannot be bothered to best them in the art of wordplay, simple a task though it may be." The contacts Sam wore had nothing to do with visual impairment. Sam was not blind, and he could see that little smile of Cross's hiding something deeper. However, he could also see that that deeper something was very painful, and that keeping himself the topic of conversation was much easier for her.

Cross nodded in understanding. She was like that when she was younger. Kids always picked on her for something and back then she'd just brush them off and move on. Then IT happened and she had to grow up. "Well, I'd do the punching of course," she added nonchalantly with a light shrug and smirk. "But I do understand where you're coming from. Nowadays avoiding extra fights is always a good thing too. So I get it, but seriously you have awesome eyes."

Sam couldn't help it. A smile broke out on his face; not one of understanding, or sympathy, or anything else. It was a genuine, grateful smile. In the Revlis family, one could be expected to solve one's own problems without assistance whenever humanly possible. To ask for the help of another was not looked down upon, per sé, but it was certainly not encouraged. For Cross to openly offer to defend Sam, combined with her rapt compliment, made Sam feel welcome on a level he had never experienced; not one of the mental variety, but of a more personal one.
"Thank you," he said finally, trying to make the smile subside for fear of looking like some sort of fool. "I like yours, as well." It was a little simpler than he had intended, but he had gotten a good look at her eyes while she was staring into his, and they were quite the specimens.

Cross turned a slight shade of pink but she smiled anyways. "Why thank you kind sir." she replied heartily lifting her drink in a toast like way before tipping it back and taking a large drink. "So my friend, what do you say to being a little fancy and testing out a wine or two. You don't drink whole glasses or anything, just little sips. I kinda wanna try a few." she offered while twisting on the stool lightly.

"I suppose that wouldn't hurt," Sam agreed. "I don't care much about being fancy, but wine testing sounds like a viable experiment. Perhaps we can determine which wines are most palatable to experienced and new drinkers alike." Whether Cross would ever know or not, Sam felt a little guilty for his previous displays of closed-mindedness. He had no intentions of getting drunk, nor would he go into this experiment with anything more or less than a neutral impression, but he felt he owed it to Cross to try and be a little more fun. At the very least, he would show her that he could open his mind just a little bit.
