Everything was in place.
It had taken a little finagling and a lot of saving, but Satoru had managed to get his hands on something Keith was going to love. And the best part? Keith wouldn't have any fucking clue. He'd been particularly careful to not mention it to Gabe or to anyone, and he'd kept Keith in the dark about certain errands and trips and such. As far as he was concerned, it was all going to be worth it.
Now the gunslinger just had to get Keith up so he could see the surprise. Hell, Satoru was excited to see Keith's reaction, though he kept a tight lid on the feeling for now. Wouldn't do to tip his hand yet.
Satoru crept back into the bedroom and sat on the bed, kissing one of Keith's ears. "Hey. Wake up you Jackass."

Keith groaned at the wake up call. "Why?" He half yawned before grabbing a pillow and shoving it over his head. He'd been up late last night and he wanted to SLEEP. If his brain had been functioning properly at that moment he would have realized what day it was and put two and two together. As of now though that thought hadn't come to mind because that meant THINKING and all he wanted right then was to stay in the wonderfully comfortable bed and sleep.

"Because if you don't then I'm going to wake Gabe up, remind him it's your birthday, and suggest he jump on the bed to wake you up." Satoru's face widened into an evil smile. "C'mon, get up. There's pancakes." Pancakes that had taken two failed batches before he'd gotten it right, but pancakes nonetheless.

It took a few seconds for Keith to get what he was saying, but finally the tatted Tora forced himself up into a sitting position. "It's my birthday?" He asked, rubbing his eyes and stretching. He blinked and looked around the room. "And you made pancakes? The fuck…" This was already turning into a strange day, he hoped he wouldn't get food poisoning. He yawned again and scratched his head. "Grab my pants, they're… somewhere." Hey, it took the guy forever to wake up, he was still processing shit.

Satoru already had them in hand. They'd been together long enough for Satoru to know his husband's (and damn was that a weird word some days, it was still pretty hard for him to believe) usual habits when it came to waking up. He tossed them at Keith's face. "Gabe's gonna be up any second," he reminded, just in case Keith wasn't awake enough to remember that much. As with most young children, Gabe had a lot of energy, especially on mornings without school. For instance, on a Saturday, like today.

Keith grunted as his pants were thrown at him. "I know, I know," he muttered as he went to pulling his pants on. On most weekends Gabe was up before he was, so it was only a matter of time before the little blond would-
"Daddy Daddy Daddy!!" Ripping Keith from his train of thought was the kid himself, running into Keith and Satoru's bedroom to hop on his father's lap. Gabe was still in his pajamas(black with cartoon skulls on them, Keith thought it looked cool so of course Gabe wanted them) and probably wouldn't want to change at all that day, no big deal. "It's your birthday today, right?!" He asked enthusiastically.
The brunette gave a laugh and nodded. It was hard to act as excited as his son was, but he didn't think Gabe would mind. "That's right."
The little boy's eyes lit up and he stood on his dad's lap so he could hug his neck. "Happy Birthday!" Just as Keith hugged him back and tried to respond, Gabe seemed to remember something and looked at Toru before his dad could speak. "I smelled pancakes, is Uncle Egil here?" Uncle Egil made all sorts of yummy food, did he show up for Daddy's birthday? The child didn't seem to notice his father's snickering beside him.

"No he's not," The gunslinger said to Gabe, masking his irritation. Why was it so hard to believe? "I made pancakes," Satoru replied. Sure they didn't do a whole lot of cooking, but they did need to know more than microwaving. Well, more than microwaving, sandwiches, and the fine art of making toast. "Made 'em for Daddy's birthday."
And he had taste-tested them too. This third batch had been marginally better than the others. "Both of you c'mon, they're gonna get cold and then you'll bitch about them."

Gabe giggled at Toru as Keith picked him up when he stood. The little blond looked up at his dad. "Toru said 'bitch'~" he giggled out.
Keith rolled his eyes and grinned a little. "Yep, and that's a grown-up word, remember?" To be honest he never really got onto Gabe for cussing, which probably wasn't the right way to parent, but it wasn't like the kid was hurting anyone. Still, he made sure to remind him from time to time JUST so he could say he tried.
The three made it to the kitchen and Gabe was flopped down into his chair. The boy refused to have a booster seat so watching him trying to reach his plate was both funny and scary sometimes. Lately he'd taken to standing up in his chair and trying to eat that way, so sure enough he got on his feet in the chair and readied himself to eat. "Pancakes! Pancakes!" He chanted over and over.

Satoru set down the plates of pancakes as the other men sat down. They actually didn't look half bad, they weren't the pristine fluffy pancakes you could get at a restaurant, but he'd learned a bit from burning two batches beforehand and he'd fucking applied it. "Pancakes," he said as he set down Gabe's plate. "Eat up."
He wanted breakfast over with as fast as possible, Keith needed to see his present, and Satoru needed to see his goddamn face when he saw it. He'd promised Mina pictures, after all.

Gabe bent down to start on his plate as Keith was sitting down with his own. He had no idea how his son managed to actually eat like that all the time, but he guessed it worked somehow. Whatever. He went to work on his own pancakes, eyes widening just a bit at the first bite. "Huh, these actually aren't that bad." He said quickly after swallowing his first bite. He'd admit it, he was impressed. Guess that was one more thing Satoru was better at than him, not that you'd catch him complaining.
It wasn't long before Keith and Gabe finished up their plates and the little blond was rubbing a full belly. He'd somehow eaten without making too much of a mess except for the syrup on his clothes, Keith would end up calling that a miracle if he ever saw one. Well, that and the fact that Toru had made all this himself, but he figured he'd teased the guy enough over them. He reached over and kissed Toru's temple. "Thank ya." He said. He'd call this a successful birthday already.

"If you wash the dishes I'll call it even," Satoru offered as he felt the kiss. To be fair, it wasn't like they ever did a lot of dishes because they never really cooked. He was well within his rights for that offer. He was also well within his rights to have it snubbed, and he was much more inclined to keep things tidy than Keith. Besides, rotting pancakes stank.
And now that he looked at Gabe, the little guy was miraculously un-sticky with the exception of his clothes. They could chuck those in a washer though. "So, about presents." He started. If Gabe had one, hopefully the kid would take that as the cue, and if not, well, just meant that Keith could get his big present sooner.

Keith gave Toru a suspicious look at the mention of presents. At the same time, Gabe's eyes had gotten wide and he jumped off his chair. "I got one!!" He called as he ran to go find his present for his dad. A few moments later he came back with a piece of paper it and handed it over. "I made you a picture Daddy!"
"You did?" The brunette asked with a grin. He pulled Gabe up on his lap as he looked at the picture of what he assumed was all of them.
The blond boy giggled and nodded as he pointed at everyone in the drawing. "That's you, and me, and Toru, and that's Echo!" He kept bouncing in his dad's lap as he looked from the paper up at Keith. "Do ya like it?"
Keith's smile widened at the drawing before looking back at Gabe. "I love it, thanks bud." He gave his son a hug and a quick kiss on the head before glancing at Satoru. He was trying to figure out what the hell he would have gotten him. Granted, there were probably several things he would love, but most of the things on that list weren't exactly kid friendly. With Gabe being right here he highly doubted it would be anything like that.

It wasn't like Satoru wasn't planning on giving Keith those gifts at some point later that night, but that was after he got Keith to see his big present. He was almost more excited about this than about later that night anyway. "Come on," he said as he stood up and gestured to the front of the house. "Mine's outside."
He was doing his best to suppress his mad grinning, but it was difficult. The gunslinger was childishly happy because of this situation, and he'd by lying if he said he wasn't a sucker for seeing his family (another phrase he still found strange every now and again) happy.

Outside? The hell could Satoru of gotten him that had to be outside? Keith pulled himself out of his chair and stood with Gabe to follow his husband through the house and to the front door. "So do I need to close my eyes?"
The little blond started nodding his head before Toru could answer. "Make 'im close his eyes Toru! Ya always gotta do that for surprises!" He didn't know what his stepdaddy had waiting for his daddy, but it sounded really big if it couldn't come into the house.

"You heard Gabe, close 'em." He kind of wished he'd had the foresight to bring down one of the blindfolds they had upstairs, but hindsight was always clearest. It wasn't like they needed it anyway. Satoru kept a hand on the knob of the door, waiting for Keith to do as he was told.
